Tarkvarakihid, commonly referred to as software layers, represent a fundamental concept in software architecture. They divide a complex software system into distinct, hierarchical levels, each responsible for a specific set of functionalities. This layered approach promotes modularity, making software easier to design, develop, test, and maintain.

The typical layered architecture consists of several layers, often starting with the presentation layer at the top, which handles user interaction and displays information. Beneath this lies the application layer, responsible for business logic and orchestrating application workflows. Further down, the data access layer manages interactions with the data storage system, such as databases. At the very bottom, the infrastructure or data layer provides the fundamental services required by the other layers, like operating system interfaces or network protocols.

Each layer generally only communicates with the layer immediately below it. This strict dependency rule ensures that changes in one layer have minimal impact on other layers, provided the interface between them remains consistent. For instance, modifying the user interface (presentation layer) should not necessitate changes in how data is stored (data access layer), as long as the application layer continues to receive the expected data.

The benefits of using tarkvarakihid include improved maintainability, as specific layers can be updated or replaced independently. It also enhances testability, allowing individual layers to be tested in isolation. Furthermore, this architectural pattern promotes reusability, as common functionalities can be encapsulated within a specific layer and accessed by multiple parts of the application or even other applications. However, a disadvantage can be potential performance overhead due to the increased number of indirect calls between layers, and an overly rigid adherence to strict layering can sometimes lead to a "sinkhole anti-pattern."
