Testability refers to the degree to which a software artifact supports testing in a cost‑effective and reliable way. A highly testable system makes it easier to design tests, execute them, observe results, and locate defects. Testability is influenced by design choices, architectural decomposition, and the clarity of interfaces, as well as by the system’s determinism and the extent to which its behavior can be controlled and observed during testing.

Key attributes of testability include controllability and observability. Controllability is the ability to provide inputs and drive the system into specific states, while observability is the ability to observe outputs, state, and internal signals. Other important factors are simplicity and modularity, loose coupling, and the presence of seams or test hooks that allow testing in isolation. Systems with complex dependencies or non-deterministic timing often present lower testability.

Practices to improve testability include designing for testability early in the lifecycle, adopting modular architectures with clear boundaries, and using dependency injection and mockable interfaces. Instrumentation, logging, and diagnostic signals enhance observability. Teams employ test doubles, dedicated test harnesses, and automated testing at unit, integration, and acceptance levels. Achieving reproducible test environments and deterministic behavior also supports repeatable testing. Metrics for evaluating testability may consider setup and execution time, ease of defect localization, and the effectiveness of tests in detecting faults.
