Tanys is a genus of small, burrowing rodents belonging to the family Sciuridae, which also includes squirrels and chipmunks. They are commonly known as ground squirrels. There are seven recognized species within the genus Tanys, all native to North America. These species are primarily found in open, grassy areas, including prairies, meadows, and agricultural fields.

The physical characteristics of tanys vary slightly between species, but they generally possess a slender build, relatively short legs, and a bushy tail. Their fur coloration ranges from brown to grayish-brown, often with lighter speckling or stripes. Tanys are well-adapted for digging, with strong claws and a compact body shape. They construct extensive burrow systems that serve as shelter from predators and extreme weather conditions, as well as for storing food.

These rodents are primarily herbivores, feeding on a diet of seeds, grasses, roots, and occasionally insects. They are known for their hoarding behavior, accumulating large caches of food to sustain them through the winter months when they hibernate. The hibernation period can last for several months, during which their body temperature and metabolic rate significantly decrease.

Tanys play an important role in their ecosystems as prey for various predators, including birds of prey, coyotes, and foxes. Their burrowing activities also contribute to soil aeration and nutrient cycling. Conservation status varies among the different species, with some being common and widespread, while others may face localized threats.
