The word combines stromen (to flow) and traject (trajectory). The concept is used to visualize how forces, boundaries, and obstacles influence the route of the flow and to identify bottlenecks or opportunities for optimization.

In practice, stromingstrajecten are derived from data and models. Methods include computational fluid dynamics (CFD), network analysis, and agent-based simulation, often supplemented by field measurements or experiments.
