Stitchable is an adjective used to describe fabrics, materials, or patterns that can be sewn together with needle and thread or by machine without undue damage or failure. Stitchability depends on factors such as fiber content, weave or knit structure, thickness, elasticity, and surface finishes, as well as the intended seam method and thread type.

Materials with high stitchability include many cotton and linen fabrics, cotton blends, and smooth synthetics when prepared and treated appropriately. Knitted fabrics are also considered stitchable, though they often require different needles, stitches, and tension. Finishes that add stiffness or reduce fraying can improve stitchability, while overly slippery or glossy surfaces may hinder stitching; stabilizers and interfacing are commonly used to support seams and embroidery on delicate fabrics.

In practice, stitchable fabrics guide choices in equipment and technique. For woven fabrics, standard or universal needles and straight or zigzag stitches are typical, with backstitching at the start and end. For stretch or knit fabrics, ballpoint or stretch needles, a zigzag or stretch stitch, and careful tension control are used to prevent skipped stitches or sagging. For delicate or lace fabrics, water-soluble stabilizers or light interfacing may be employed.

Applications of stitchable materials include garment construction, embroidery and appliqué, quilt-making, and even some textile-based electronics where conductors are stitched with conductive threads. Some materials require special handling, such as leather or vinyl, where heavy needles and edge-finishing may be necessary.
