A stimulid is a type of small, free-swimming crustacean belonging to the order Stomatopoda. While often referred to as "mantis shrimp," this term more broadly encompasses all stomatopods, making "stimulid" a more precise classification for these particular, smaller members. They are characterized by their elongated bodies, segmented tails, and a pair of specialized raptorial appendages used for capturing prey. These appendages can be either club-like, used for smashing, or spear-like, used for spearing.

Stimulids are found in marine environments worldwide, inhabiting shallow coastal waters to deeper oceanic trenches. They are predatory, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates such as fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Their hunting strategy involves rapid strikes with their raptorial appendages, which can be incredibly fast and powerful. Despite their relatively small size compared to some larger mantis shrimp, stimulids are formidable hunters within their ecological niche.

Reproduction in stimulids, like other stomatopods, involves external fertilization. Females typically carry their eggs in a brood pouch until they hatch. The larval stages are planktonic, drifting in the water column before settling to the seabed to develop into juvenile stimulids. Their complex visual systems, possessing some of the most advanced eyes in the animal kingdom, play a crucial role in their survival, aiding in prey detection, predator avoidance, and communication.
