Splijtbijlen are hand tools designed to split wood along the grain. They are a type of axe with a heavy, wedge-shaped head and a relatively short handle, optimized for delivering splitting force rather than chopping. The tool is used in forestry, carpentry, and firewood preparation to break logs into smaller sections.

Design and variants commonly feature a forged steel head with a pronounced wedge and a blunt back (poll) that can be used to drive wooden wedges or a splitting wedge if necessary. Handles are typically wooden (often hickory or ash) or modern fiberglass, with lengths chosen for control and leverage. In Dutch usage the term kloofbijl is common, and the plural Splijtbijlen refers to multiple such axes. Some models include a hammer-like back to assist with driving wedges into stubborn pieces.

Use and technique involve placing a log on a stable surface and striking along the grain to open it. Care is taken to keep the axe oriented with the blade aligned to the splitting line and to use controlled, repeated blows rather than forcible chopping. For very dense or large logs, a splitting wedge or an additional tool may be used to initiate a split before finishing with the splitters.

Maintenance and safety emphasize keeping the edge sharp, inspecting the handle for cracks, and storing the tool dry. Wooden handles should be oiled to prevent cracking. Users wear safety gear such as goggles and gloves, and keep bystanders clear of the striking area. Splijtbijlen remain a common choice for firewood preparation, though hydraulic log splitters provide an alternative for larger-scale work.
