Softbokse, often translated from English as softboxes, are adjustable light modifiers used in photography and video to diffuse a light source and produce soft, even illumination. By enclosing a light behind a diffusing material, typically a translucent fabric stretched over a frame with a reflective interior, they reduce harsh shadows and lessen specular hotspots while preserving some directionality.

Most softbokse are rectangular, square, or octagonal in shape, though other forms exist. Inside, a reflective lining (silver or white) helps maximize the light, while an outer diffusion panel or internal baffle controls softness. The front diffusion panel can be removable to adjust diffusion levels. Softbokse attach to flash heads or continuous lights via mounts such as Bowens, Elinchrom, or Godox equivalents, and can be used with or without attached grids to restrict beam spread.

In practice, softbokse are favored for portraiture, product shots, and interviews because they create flattering, wraparound light and gentle falloff. Their size relative to the subject determines softness: larger boxes relative to the subject produce softer shadows. However, they reduce light intensity and require more space and time to set up compared with bare lights. They also introduce light losses due to diffusion and may require more powerful or additional light sources to maintain exposure.

Softbokse are a standard option in studio setups and are commonly used with stands and boom arms to position the light at ideal angles.
