Skýjaþjónusta (cloud service) refers to the on-demand delivery of computing resources over the Internet. It enables organizations and individuals to access computing power, storage, databases, software, and other IT services without owning and operating physical infrastructure. Resources are typically provisioned and billed on a pay-as-you-go basis, with scalability that allows users to increase or decrease capacity as needed.

Cloud services are commonly categorized by three primary service models: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), which provides virtualized computing resources such as servers and storage; Platform as a Service (PaaS), which supplies a development and runtime environment for applications; and Software as a Service (SaaS), which delivers software applications hosted remotely. Delivery models include public cloud (shared infrastructure), private cloud (dedicated infrastructure for a single organization), hybrid cloud (combination of public and private), and community cloud (shared by a defined group with common concerns).

The cloud has evolved through major providers and platforms, with early growth driven by scalable infrastructure offerings and programmable interfaces. Today, platforms from global providers offer extensive global networks, rapid provisioning, managed services, and integrated security features. Common use cases include hosting websites and applications, data storage and backup, disaster recovery, data analytics, and AI/ML workloads. The cloud enables rapid experimentation, geographic reach, and cost efficiency for many organizations.

Key considerations include security and compliance, data privacy and sovereignty, governance and access controls, vendor lock-in, and performance variability. Effective cloud use often involves strong identity and access management, encryption of data at rest and in transit, regular auditing, and clear data residency policies.
