Signaalfase is the Dutch term for the individual phases that constitute a traffic signal cycle. Each cycle comprises several sequential phases that coordinate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians at an intersection. A typical signaalfase may include the green, amber, and red signals for one or more directions, as well as pedestrian crossing indications. The phases are controlled by a traffic engineering software or an electronic traffic signal controller that manages timing, transitions, and conflict resolution.

The purpose of a signaalfase is to reduce conflicts between conflicting traffic movements, improve intersection capacity, and provide safe opportunities for pedestrians. Timing parameters such as phase length, intergreen interval, and clearance interval are set according to traffic volumes, turning movements, and safety criteria. In many European countries, the design of signaalfases follows the guidelines of the European Union's “Guidelines for the Design and Management of Road Traffic Signals”. These guidelines prescribe minimum green times, maximum amber times, and safe clearance interval lengths based on detector feedback and traffic analysis.

Signaalfases are often grouped into a coordinated signal system on a corridor, allowing a platoon of vehicles to move through several intersections without stopping. Coordinated timing schemes, such as the “green wave”, rely on the precise scheduling of multiple signaalfases. Modern signal controllers can adapt phase durations in real time using adaptive signal control technology, enabling dynamic adjustment to changing traffic conditions and improving overall network performance.
