Shonen, written as 少年 in Japanese, is a term that denotes young boys. In manga and anime, it also refers to a genre or demographic category aimed primarily at male readers roughly aged 12 to 18. It is distinct from shōjo (girls), seinen (adult men), and josei (adult women). The term also designates magazines and publishing lines that target this demographic, as well as the kinds of stories they typically carry.

Shonen narratives commonly emphasize action, adventure, and personal growth. Protagonists face challenges through perseverance, training, and teamwork, often with clear goals and escalating stakes. Common tropes include rivalries, power-ups, tournaments, and friends forming a close-knit group. Humor and light romance may appear, but the core focus remains on courage, determination, and overcoming obstacles.

Shonen developed in postwar Japan and grew through weekly magazines such as Weekly Shonen Jump, which serialized many influential titles. It has become a dominant force in global manga and anime, with enduring franchises such as Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and My Hero Academia. These works typically blend fast pacing with long-term world-building and continuous character development across arcs.

Shonen property often expands beyond print into anime adaptations, films, video games, and merchandise. International audiences have widely embraced shonen, though localization sometimes adjusts cultural references and pacing to suit different markets.

Scholarly and media critiques note tensions around violence levels, gender representation, and the handling of characterization across long-running series. Despite these critiques, shonen remains a central and influential pillar of modern manga and anime, shaping storytelling conventions and popular culture globally.
