Shellcladding refers to an exterior cladding system that forms the outer shell of a building or structure. Typical installation approaches include unitized panel systems, where prefabricated blocks are assembled off-site and then installed on the building, and site-fixed systems with subframes and concealed fixings. Rainscreen gaps facilitate drainage and air movement to manage moisture. Design considerations for shellcladding include thermal expansion, wind loads, and building movement, as well as compatibility with waterproofing and vapor barriers.

The shell provides weather resistance, insulation support, and sometimes solar shading or daylight control, while contributing to aesthetics and branding. It can also accommodate integrated technologies such as photovoltaic layers. Durability, maintenance, fire performance, and long-term color and surface integrity are important factors in material choice.
