Serverclass, or server class, is a concept in IT infrastructure management describing a logical grouping of servers that share common characteristics. The grouping typically encompasses hardware profile, operating system image, software stack, and management policies, enabling consistent provisioning, patching, monitoring, and retirement across the fleet.

By defining server classes, administrators can simplify capacity planning, enforce standardized configurations, and apply lifecycle procedures at scale. A serverclass acts as a blueprint used by deployment automation, configuration management, and monitoring systems to select appropriate resources and apply the correct rules.

Key components commonly associated with a server class include: a hardware specification (CPU, memory, storage, network), a software image or OS baseline, application or service stack, security and access controls, and lifecycle policies (provisioning, updates, decommissioning). Network configuration, such as VLANs or firewall rules, can also be bound to a class.

Server classes are used in data centers and cloud environments to implement host groups or instance types. In practice they map to concrete resources via templates or manifests and may be referenced by deployment plans, auto-scaling rules, and resource pools. Distinctions are often made between server classes and server roles, with a class focusing on the hardware and image, while a role describes the function (web server, database).

Best practices include using explicit naming, versioned images, and automated drift detection to ensure that live servers remain aligned with their class specifications. Changes to a server class typically trigger controlled updates across all members to maintain consistency.
