Screenfilters refer to devices, coatings, or software configurations that modify the light emitted by display screens to improve readability, privacy, or comfort. They are used on computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and televisions to address glare, eye strain, blue light, or unauthorized viewing.

Types and features include physical filters and digital solutions. Physical filters consist of privacy filters that reduce viewing angles, glare-reducing or matte filters that scatter reflections, and anti-reflective or polarizing coatings that improve contrast in bright environments. Privacy filters are often offered as clip-on, magnetic, or adhesive overlays and may slightly reduce brightness. Digital solutions encompass blue-light reduction and color temperature adjustments, such as night shift or software-based filters, and screen dimming apps that lower brightness independently of hardware brightness.

Installation and use vary by type. Physical filters are typically attached to the screen through clips, adhesives, or magnetized frames, and may require alignment with the display edges. Digital filters are configured through operating system settings or third-party applications and do not physically alter the screen.

Effectiveness and limitations depend on purpose. Privacy filters effectively constrain viewing angles but can reduce perceived brightness and color accuracy. Glare-reducing and anti-reflective filters improve visibility in bright rooms but may introduce color shifts. Blue-light filters can ease eye fatigue for some users but do not address all causes of eye strain.
