Riskidentifiering is the systematic process of identifying potential events that could affect the achievement of objectives. It involves recognizing threats and opportunities, their sources, and their potential impacts, in order to create a structured view of risks that can be analyzed and managed within a risk management framework.

It is applied across settings such as project management, operations, information technology, safety, finance, and compliance. The purpose is to inform decision making by enabling risk assessment, prioritization, ownership assignment, and the design of controls and response plans. The main outputs are a risk register, a risk taxonomy, and a plan for ongoing monitoring.

Process elements include establishing context and objectives, identifying risks through workshops, interviews, brainstorming, checklists, scenario analysis, and reviewing historical data; documenting each risk with description, causes, effects, and existing controls; evaluating probability and potential impact; and prioritizing risks to guide treating actions. For each top risk, an owner and a response strategy should be defined (avoid or mitigate threats, transfer risk, accept risk, or capitalize on opportunities).

Techniques and tools commonly used include qualitative methods such as likelihood and impact matrices, as well as quantitative approaches like failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) or probabilistic modeling. Supporting artifacts include risk registers, risk heat maps, and dashboards. The activity is iterative and should be updated as context and information change.

Outcomes include improved awareness, better prioritization, and enhanced ability to allocate resources for risk treatment. Governance considerations involve aligning with risk appetite, integrating with project governance, and reporting to stakeholders. Challenges include cognitive bias, incomplete data, and a dynamic risk landscape.
