Righthanders are individuals who predominantly use their right hand for tasks such as writing, throwing, and tool use. The vast majority of the global population—roughly 85 to 90 percent—identify as right-handed, with a smaller share left-handed or ambidextrous.

Handedness emerges in early childhood and is influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Brain lateralization, particularly dominance of the left hemisphere for language and fine motor control, is commonly associated with right-handedness, though the relationship is not absolute.

Many tools, devices, and layouts have historically been designed with right-handed users in mind, from scissors and desks to keyboard layouts. Left-handed individuals often adapt by using mirrored tools or special editions; some cultures have stigmas or custom practices related to left-handedness, though attitudes have generally become more inclusive.

Handedness is not uniform across all activities. A person can be right-handed for writing but prefer the left hand for certain sports or tasks, a pattern known as mixed-handedness or cross-dominance. Some people are strongly right-handed for most actions, while others show more balanced skill.

In research, handedness is used as a proxy for brain lateralization in studies of language, cognition, and motor development. It is also considered in ergonomics, product design, and assistive technology to accommodate diverse user needs.
