Rendering APIs, or graphics APIs, are software interfaces that allow applications to request and control the operations of a graphics processing unit (GPU) to render 2D and 3D imagery. They provide the means to issue commands, manage resources such as textures and vertex buffers, select shading programs, and coordinate timing and synchronization between CPU and GPU. By exposing primitives for drawing, shading, texturing, and compute tasks, rendering APIs enable the construction of graphics pipelines and complex visual effects.

A typical API presents a set of concepts including command streams or command buffers, render pipelines, shaders, buffers and textures, samplers, and synchronization primitives. Applications submit commands to the GPU, which then executes them in a pipeline that may include vertex processing, geometry shading, rasterization, pixel shading, and output to a framebuffer or presentation surface. Modern APIs also emphasize explicit resource management and multi-threaded command generation to reduce driver overhead.

Historically, graphics APIs evolved from fixed-function interfaces to programmable pipelines. Early APIs like legacy OpenGL and Direct3D abstracted more details, while modern low-level APIs provide finer control over memory, parallelism, and synchronization. The major contemporary families include Vulkan and DirectX 12 on desktop, Metal on Apple platforms, and WebGPU for web-based graphics. These are designed to be cross-platform or vendor-specific and often require more manual management but offer improved performance and predictability.

Developers use rendering APIs to build engines, games, and visualization tools. The choice of API is influenced by target platforms, performance goals, and the level of control required, with many engines providing abstraction layers to support multiple backends.
