Reliëfs are a type of artistic sculpture that is carved into a flat surface, where the sculpted elements project from or are recessed into the background. The term "reliëf" itself originates from the Latin word "relevare," meaning to raise or lift.

There are several categories of reliëf, primarily distinguished by the degree to which the sculpted elements are raised from the background. Haut-reliëf, or high relief, features figures that are significantly carved out from the surface, often with parts fully detached. Bas-reliëf, or low relief, has designs that are only slightly raised from the background, creating a subtle sense of depth. Mezzo-reliëf, or medium relief, falls between these two, with a moderate projection.

Intaglio is a related but contrasting technique where the design is carved *into* the surface, creating a recessed image. However, when this recessed image is then seen from the front, it can appear as a form of relief, particularly when viewed in profile or from a distance.
