Hautreliëf

Hautreliëf, also written haut-relief or high relief, is a type of relief sculpture in which figures or motifs project prominently from the background plane. In true high relief, much of the figure’s volume stands out from the surface, and parts of the work may be nearly detached from the background.

In contrast, bas-relief (low relief) remains shallow, with forms only slightly projecting from the plane, while sunken relief is carved into the surface so that the image sits below the surrounding plane. High relief is valued for its dramatic effect, strong contrasts of light and shadow, and the sense of immediacy it can convey.

High relief often requires more extensive carving and may involve undercutting to enhance the projection and three-dimensionality. Larger works may benefit from structural planning and careful backing, as the protruding elements demand durability and balance.

Historically, hautreliëf has roots in ancient Greek and Roman sculpture and has been widely used in Renaissance and Baroque architectural decoration, as well as in monumental relief panels and altarpieces. It remains a common technique in contemporary sculpture, used in public art and mixed-media works to create immediacy and spatial dynamism.
