An altarpiece is a work of art situated behind the altar in a Christian church, intended to enhance worship and contemplation. Traditionally it is a painting or sculpture, or a combination of both, depicting sacred subjects such as the Virgin Mary, Christ, or saints. Altarpieces may be permanently fixed to the church wall or designed as portable screens that can be closed or opened.

Altarpieces vary in form and structure. They can be single-panel works or complex polyptychs with multiple hinged panels, sometimes arranged in tiers. A common feature is a predella, a lower narrative strip with smaller scenes. Materials and techniques range from tempera and gilded wood in the medieval period to oil on panel in the Renaissance. The artistic program often combines iconography, composition, and liturgical function to convey doctrinal messages during worship.

Historically, altarpieces were central to medieval and Renaissance church decoration in Europe. Northern European centers favored detailed, naturalistic panels and composite multi-panel constructions, while Italian centers emphasized integrated scenes and "sacra conversazione" arrangements. Notable examples include the Ghent Altarpiece, the Isenheim Altarpiece, and numerous Maestà and polyptych works by Italian and Flemish masters. Altarpieces also served as votive offerings, teaching tools for parishioners, and focal points for devotion.

In modern contexts, altarpieces continue to be created and conserved as cultural heritage. Conservation challenges include wood decay, paint or gold leaf loss, and environmental damage, with restoration practices aiming to preserve both artistic integrity and liturgical function.
