Rehabilitation is a systematic and multidisciplinary process aimed at enabling individuals affected by illness, injury, or disability to regain or compensate for lost function and to participate in daily life and social roles. It addresses physical, cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions with the goal of maximizing independence, participation, and quality of life. In many languages, including Romanian, the term rehabilitation is closely related to rehabilitation and rehabilitation services.

A typical rehabilitation program is individualized and delivered by a team that may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, social workers, and physicians. Interventions commonly involve therapeutic exercises, gait and balance training, manual therapy, and motor relearning, as well as the use of assistive devices, prosthetics, and orthotics. Cognitive and communication rehabilitation, pain management, respiratory therapy, wound care, and education for patients and families are also important components.

Settings for rehabilitation include inpatient units, outpatient clinics, home-based programs, and community centers. Common indications include recovery after stroke or spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic surgery or injury, chronic diseases such as COPD or arthritis, and developmental or aging-related impairments. Rehabilitation also plays a role in long-term management and secondary prevention.

Outcomes are measured using functional scales, activities of daily living, participation, and patient-reported results. The field emphasizes evidence-based practice, goal-oriented planning, and patient engagement. Access to rehabilitation services and equity of care remain important considerations for health systems worldwide.
