Regentrugs, also known as regent snakes or *Regent’s snakes*, are a group of non-venomous colubrid snakes native to Australia. The most well-known species in this group is *Denisonia kingii*, commonly referred to as the regent snake. These snakes belong to the subfamily Dipsadinae and are part of the broader Australian snake fauna.

Regent snakes are slender, medium-sized snakes typically reaching lengths of 60 to 90 centimeters, though some individuals may grow slightly longer. They exhibit a range of coloration patterns, often featuring a base of gray, brown, or olive with darker crossbands or saddles along their backs. Their undersides are usually lighter, sometimes with faint markings. The name "regent" is believed to derive from their distinctive appearance, resembling the robes worn by British regents.

These snakes are primarily found in forested and wooded areas across eastern Australia, including regions such as New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day, and are often seen basking in sunlight on tree branches or rocks. Regent snakes are opportunistic feeders, preying on small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, and other snakes. Their diet contributes to their role in controlling populations of smaller reptiles and amphibians in their ecosystem.

Regent snakes are generally docile and not considered aggressive, though they may defend themselves by flattening their necks and hissing if threatened. They are not venomous and pose no significant danger to humans. However, like all wild animals, they should be observed from a safe distance to avoid stress or injury to the snake.

Conservation status varies by subspecies, but many regent snakes are not currently listed as threatened. Habitat loss due to land clearing and urbanization remains a concern for their long-term survival. Efforts to protect forested areas and promote responsible wildlife interaction help ensure the continued presence of these snakes in their natural habitats.
