Rauhakasvi is the Finnish common name for the peace lily, Spathiphyllum spp., a group of evergreen perennial plants in the Araceae family grown primarily as indoor ornamentals. They are known for glossy, dark-green leaves and white spathes that enclose a spadix when flowering. Native to tropical regions of the Americas, peace lilies are adapted to warm, humid environments and are widely cultivated as houseplants worldwide.

In appearance, rauhakasvi plants typically reach a compact to moderate size, with upright foliage and, when conditions are favorable, showy white flower spathes. The flowers can last several weeks and may appear multiple times a year in bright indirect light. The genus includes several species and cultivars, offering a range of leaf shapes and plant sizes.

Cultivation and care: rauhakasvi prefers bright, indirect light and temperatures between 18 and 24°C (64–75°F). It tolerates lower light but may flower less. Use a rich, well-draining potting mix and water moderately, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged; allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Regular misting and higher humidity support growth. Fertilize lightly during the growing season.

Toxicity and handling: rauhakasvi is poisonous to humans and pets if ingested, containing calcium oxalate crystals. It can be sensitive to overwatering and fluoride in tap water, and common pests include spider mites and scale.
