ramspänne

Ramspänne is a fastening device used to secure and tension a frame in various applications. The term comes from Swedish, where ram means frame and spänne means clamp or fastener. A ramspänne typically consists of a base element that sits on the frame edge and a tensioning member—such as a screw, cam, or bolt—that applies pressure to hold the frame pieces together and keep the joints square.

Common uses include furniture and carpentry where wooden frames must stay square during assembly, as well as picture framing, window and door construction, and other situations where a frame needs to remain rigid under load. In picture framing, ramspänne may be used as corner clamps or edge clamps to secure joints until adhesive sets; in furniture fabrication, similar corner blocks or bracket systems function as ramspännen.

Design and variants vary: screw-type ramspänne with a threaded shaft; cam-action ramspänne that uses a lever; and spring-loaded versions that provide constant tension. Some are adjustable to accommodate different frame thicknesses and edge profiles.

Installation and use require care to avoid damage. Operators position the ramspänne at strategic points—typically at corners or along mid-sides—then tighten gradually to draw the frame into correct alignment without overtightening. Protective pads or soft jaws are often used to prevent marring of the frame surfaces.

Materials commonly include steel or stainless steel for strength and durability, with aluminum variants offered for light-duty work. Durability and corrosion resistance are considerations in humid or outdoor environments.
