Pubertás, or puberty, is the developmental period during which a child matures sexually and becomes capable of reproduction. In Hungarian usage, pubertás refers to the same process. The onset varies, but in most populations girls begin between about 8 and 13 years and boys between about 9 and 14. The duration is typically several years, ending when the individual reaches full physical and sexual maturation.

Pubertal physical changes include a growth spurt, development of secondary sexual characteristics, and changes in body composition. Girls typically show breast development and the growth of pubic and underarm hair, followed by the onset of menarche. Boys show testicular enlargement, penis growth, facial and body hair, and a deepening voice. Both sexes may experience skin changes, body odor, and increased height.

Hormonal basis: Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis leads to increased production of estrogens or androgens, driving the changes. GnRH stimulates LH and FSH from the pituitary; gonads produce sex steroids; adrenal glands contribute with androgens such as DHEA, fueling body hair and other features.

Brain and behavior: Puberty involves cognitive and emotional changes, shifts in mood, and evolving social attitudes. The timing can influence self-esteem and risk behavior, underscoring the importance of supportive environments.

Health and variation: Timing is influenced by genetics, nutrition, and health status; extreme deviations may indicate a health issue such as precocious puberty or delayed puberty. Professionals assess growth patterns, development, and, if needed, manage underlying conditions.
