Prosesstekniikka, or process engineering, is the application of engineering principles to design, analyze, and optimize processes that transform raw materials into finished products. It combines elements of chemical, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering to ensure efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible operations. The discipline originated in the mid‑twentieth century with the rapid industrialisation of chemical plants, and it has since expanded to encompass a wide range of industries including petrochemicals, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, energy, water treatment, and biotechnology.

Process engineers use mathematical modeling, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and control theory to develop detailed process flowsheets. They evaluate reaction kinetics, heat and mass balances, and material requirements to predict performance and identify bottlenecks. Modern process design relies heavily on computer‑aided tools such as process simulators (e.g., Aspen Plus or HYSYS) and plant‑layout software. During operation, process engineers work closely with plant operators to implement control strategies, troubleshoot faults, and improve reliability. They also assess safety, environmental impact, and regulatory compliance, often leading life‑cycle analyses and risk assessments.

Key concepts in prosesstekniikka include unit operations such as distillation, filtration, crystallisation, and heat exchange; process optimisation techniques such as linear programming and sensitivity analysis; and advanced control methods like model predictive control. Sustainable process engineering focuses on waste minimisation, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable feedstocks.

Academic programmes in process engineering are typically offered as bachelor’s or master’s degrees in chemical engineering, industrial engineering, or specialised process engineering tracks. Graduates are employed in plant design, process safety, quality assurance, and research and development across a global industrial sector.
