Some presenningar are designed to be breathable to reduce condensation, but most primary uses emphasize water resistance and protection from the elements.

Typical uses include covering stock or scaffolding at construction sites, shielding crops or stored equipment in agriculture, serving as ground sheets or temporary roofs for camping and outdoor events, and providing emergency shelter in disaster or camping situations. Care and maintenance involve keeping them dry when stored, avoiding prolonged sun exposure to extend life, cleaning with mild soap, and repairing small tears with patches or suitable tape.
