Presenning is a large sheet of waterproof material used to cover goods, provide shelter, or protect objects from weather. It is commonly used in transport, construction, agriculture, and camping. The term is widely used in Scandinavian languages and corresponds to the English tarpaulin.

Most presenningar are made from polyethylene, either woven or nonwoven, often with a plastic coating or laminate to improve water resistance. Other common materials include canvas or polyester fabrics coated with PVC or polyurethane. Tarps come in various weights, with heavier grades offering greater tear resistance and durability, though they can be stiffer and bulkier.

Typical features include reinforced edges, double-stitched hems, and metal or plastic grommets at regular intervals for tying. Seams may be heat-sealed or sewn, depending on the material. UV stabilizers are often added to extend life when used in bright sun. Some presenningar include corner rings or reinforced corners to reduce wear at attachment points.

Uses include covering cargo on trucks and ships, temporary roofs or shelters at construction sites, protection of equipment and firewood, outdoor events, camping, and emergency relief. They can function as rain tarps, windbreaks, or improvised tents, and are available in a range of sizes to suit different tasks.

Care and maintenance involve storing in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight when not in use, cleaning with mild soap and water, and inspecting for tears or worn areas. Prolonged exposure to sun and harsh weather reduces lifespan, and damaged sections should be repaired or replaced to maintain effectiveness.
