Coined as a neologism combining preparedness with the agentive suffix -or, the term has appeared in emergency-management literature and risk-planning discussions since the early 2020s. It is used to refer to roles, tools, or programs aimed at sustaining and improving preparedness across domains.

Core activities include risk and threat assessment, scenario planning, development of response and recovery plans, drills and exercises, asset and inventory mapping, communication protocols, and after-action reviews. Preparednessors often employ data analytics, dashboards, checklists, and simulation tools to support decision making and to identify gaps.

The concept overlaps with resilience, business continuity, and emergency-management frameworks. Proponents argue that it provides a cohesive label for cross-functional readiness efforts. Critics say the term is vague and loosely defined, which can hinder adoption without clear standards, metrics, or accountability.

In practice, preparednessors may be designated roles (planning officer), software platforms that automate contingency tasks, or programmatic initiatives that coordinate multiple departments.
