Prägla is a term used in engineering and design to describe a stamping-based surface-imprinting process that applies a patterned relief onto a substrate. The term is derived from the German word prägen, meaning to emboss or stamp, and is used in some industry contexts as a descriptive term rather than a formal standard.

In a typical prägla operation, a patterned die is pressed into a workpiece with controlled force, pressure, and sometimes heat, causing the pattern to be transferred as a raised relief on the surface. The method can be performed on metals, polymers, and ceramic composites, often after surface preparation such as cleaning or scoring.

Applications include decorative surface finishes on coins, jewelry, architectural panels, packaging, and tactile interfaces for consumer electronics. Prägla offers high repeatability for fine patterns and good durability, but requires dedicated tooling, precise registration, and consideration of material ductility, registry errors, and potential fatigue at high cycle counts.

Variants of prägla may use cold pressing, hot stamping, or laser-assisted tooling to improve pattern fidelity or to accommodate heat-sensitive materials. The term remains informal in many sectors, and standardized vocabulary around the technique has not been established.
