Potentiaalmeter is a term used in some laboratories and theory to denote an instrument intended to measure physical potential, especially electric potential, with reference to a defined zero. Unlike a standard voltmeter, which typically reports a potential difference between two points, a potentiaalmeter is described as capable of indicating an absolute potential of a point or a potential distribution within a system, anchored to a stable reference such as a primary emf standard or a well-characterized reference electrode.

Principle of operation

In electronic variants, the device combines a high-impedance sensing input with a calibration subsystem that ties measurements to a recognized potential scale. Through a null-balance or feedback approach, the unknown potential is compared to a controllable reference until equilibrium is achieved, yielding a readout that is intended to reflect absolute potential in volts. In electrochemical variants, the potentiaalmeter uses reference electrodes and temperature-compensated calibration to map measured potential to standard electrode potentials. Across implementations, traceable calibration and careful shielding are emphasized to minimize drift and interference.

Design and variants

Potentiaalmeter concepts exist in bench-top instruments, handheld units, and modular lab systems. Electronic versions emphasize high input impedance, low noise, and calibration against primary standards, often with digital interfaces for data logging. Electrochemical variants focus on stable reference electrodes and controlled environmental conditions to ensure meaningful absolute-potential readings.

Applications

Proposed applications include metrology and calibration of voltage standards, investigation of potential fields in physics experiments, electrochemical research, battery and energy storage testing, and semiconductor device characterization. The term remains less standardized than traditional potentiometry or voltmeter terminology and is primarily used in specialized or theoretical contexts.
