Populism is a political logic that presents politics as a dichotomy between “the people” and “the elites,” arguing that the general will of the people is paramount and that existing institutions have betrayed it. Populists often rely on direct, simplistic messaging, charismatic leadership, and crisis rhetoric. Populism can be deployed across ideologies, including left-wing and right-wing variants, and can pursue anti-elitist redistribution, national sovereignty, or anti-immigrant agendas.

Whether populism strengthens or threatens democracy is widely debated. Proponents argue it mobilizes neglected segments, broadens participation, and foregrounds policy concerns ignored by elites. Critics contend that populist projects can erode constitutional norms, undermine minority rights, weaken independent institutions, and undermine the rule of law, especially when populist leaders attack the press and courts or override checks and balances. Outcomes depend on institutional design, the rule of law, and the pace of reform; economic shocks, media fragmentation, and social polarization can amplify populist appeal.
