Plantaarifaskioosi, commonly known as plantar fasciitis, is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. This condition is a frequent cause of heel pain.

The pain associated with plantar fasciitis is typically most severe with the first steps taken in the morning or after a period of rest. It may lessen with activity but can return after prolonged standing or walking. The pain is often described as sharp or stabbing and is usually felt on the underside of the heel.

Several factors can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. These include overuse, such as from prolonged standing, walking, or running; sudden increases in physical activity; obesity; wearing unsupportive footwear; and anatomical factors like flat feet or high arches. Tightness in the calf muscles and Achilles tendon can also play a role.

Diagnosis is generally based on a review of the patient's medical history and a physical examination. Imaging tests like X-rays or ultrasound are usually not necessary but may be used to rule out other conditions.

Treatment for plantar fasciitis aims to relieve pain and inflammation and to address the underlying causes. Common treatment strategies include rest, ice application, stretching exercises for the calf and plantar fascia, over-the-counter pain relievers, and wearing supportive shoes or orthotic inserts. In some cases, physical therapy, night splints, or corticosteroid injections may be recommended. Surgery is rarely required.
