Penetrant refers to a liquid used in liquid penetrant testing (LPT), a nondestructive examination method for revealing surface-breaking defects in materials. The penetrant is drawn into cracks by capillary action, and after excess is removed a developer is applied to draw the penetrant back out, creating a visible indication on the surface. The technique is relatively fast and cost-effective for a range of materials.

Penetrants are typically categorized as visible dye penetrants and fluorescent penetrants. Visible penetrants rely on a colored dye observable under normal lighting, while fluorescent penetrants emit light under ultraviolet illumination and are often more sensitive. Removal methods include solvent-removable, water-washable, and post-emulsifiable penetrants, each with specific cleaning steps to eliminate surface residues before the developer is applied.

Typical procedure includes thorough surface cleaning and drying, applying penetrant evenly, allowing a dwell time for penetration, removing excess penetrant by the appropriate method, applying a developer to draw the penetrant from defects, and inspecting under the correct lighting. Indications are evaluated against standards to determine acceptability. Surface condition, roughness, and contamination can influence sensitivity and detectability.

Penetrant testing is widely used in aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and general metal fabrication, as well as for plastics and composites. It detects surface-breaking flaws such as cracks, laps, and porosity that extend to the surface. Safety and environmental considerations include handling flammable solvents, proper disposal of penetrants and cleaners, and adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment.
