Acceptability is the degree to which something is considered acceptable by a person or group, arising from the interaction of norms, values, preferences, and practical considerations. It can vary across cultures, contexts, and over time. Scholars distinguish several dimensions: normative or ethical acceptability (conformance with rules and moral judgments); social acceptability (public perception and approval); functional or practical acceptability (feasibility and adequacy for a purpose); and cultural acceptability (alignment with shared meanings within a culture).

In linguistics and psychology, acceptability judgments assess whether a sentence or behavior is considered acceptable, often to test theories about grammar, cognition, or perception. In sociology and policy studies, acceptability affects decisions about laws, technology adoption, and program implementation. In technology and business, user or market acceptability matters for adoption; models such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) link perceived usefulness and ease of use to acceptance.

Measurement typically uses surveys, Likert scales, experiments, or qualitative interviews. Analysts examine factors such as perceived benefits and costs, risk, trust, accessibility, equity, and stakeholder values. Limitations include subjectivity, context-dependence, and the possibility of conflicting assessments among groups. Critics note that what is acceptable is not objective and can reflect power dynamics and cultural bias; thus, claims of acceptability should be evaluated with transparent criteria and empirical support.

Acceptability is a cross-disciplinary concept describing how judged fit or permission is granted to actions, policies, products, ideas, or utterances within a given community.
