Detectability refers to the probability that a given object, signal, or event is observed or detected when it is present, under specified conditions. It is a property of the observing process and the environment rather than of the object alone. Detectability is a central concern in fields ranging from statistics and ecology to astronomy and medicine, where measurements are often imperfect and observations may be incomplete.

In practice, detectability is often described by a detection probability or detection rate. In ecology, for example, detection probability describes the chance of observing a species during a survey, which may be less than one even when the species is present. Statistical models such as occupancy or capture-recapture models estimate detection probabilities; signal processing uses thresholding and ROC analysis; simulation and injection-recovery tests help quantify performance limits. Transparent reporting of detection limits and effort is essential to interpret results correctly and to compare findings across studies.
