The patas, or patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), is a species of Old World monkey in the family Cercopithecidae. It is the sole member of the genus Erythrocebus.

Physically, patas are slender and relatively long-legged compared to other monkeys, an adaptation for fast running. They have short, coarse fur that is typically orange-brown on the back and lighter on the belly. Adults show sexual dimorphism, with males larger than females, and facial features that are often dark with a pale muzzle.

Distribution and habitat: The patas occupies dry, open savannas and light woodlands across much of sub-Saharan Africa, often near water. It favors areas with sparse tree cover that allow for rapid movement on the ground.

Behavior and ecology: It is diurnal and highly terrestrial, living in multi-male, multi-female troops that may include 5 to 40 individuals. The species is known for its speed, capable of reaching speeds around 55 km/h to escape predators. It exhibits social grooming and clear dominance relationships within troops.

Diet and reproduction: The patas is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, leaves, grasses, and insects, with occasional small vertebrates. Breeding can occur year-round in favorable conditions; gestation lasts about 168 to 174 days, typically producing a single infant. Infants are weaned after about 6 to 9 months and reach sexual maturity around 3 to 4 years.

Conservation status: The IUCN Red List lists the patas as Least Concern due to a wide distribution and a large, relatively stable population. Local threats include habitat alteration and hunting in some areas.
