Historically, pannukuvia emerged with the rise of digital photography and the normalization of image sharing on social media in the early 21st century. It draws on traditions of still life and domestic photography but foregrounds materiality—metal, enamel, oil, and patina—and the reflective properties of pan surfaces.

Typical works feature close-up or macro compositions of pans, lids, spatulas, and occasionally prepared food items. Photographers often exploit shallow depth of field, high contrast, and natural window light to highlight texture and color, such as the gleam of a stainless steel surface or the matte finish of a seasoned cast iron pan.
