Palletization, or palletising, is the process of placing goods on a pallet to enable efficient handling, storage, and transport. Goods are arranged in layers on a flat base, often with interlocking patterns to maximize stability and weight distribution. Pallets allow forklifts, pallet jacks, and automated systems to move large quantities quickly and safely through warehouses and distribution networks.

Pallets vary in size and material. The European EUR-pallet measures 1200 by 800 millimetres; North American pallets are often 40 by 48 inches. Other ISO and industry sizes exist. Materials include wood, plastic, metal, and composites. Wood pallets are commonly treated to meet ISPM 15 requirements to prevent pest spread, and many carry stamps from organizations such as EPAL or manufacturers to indicate quality and compatibility. Pallets can be two-way or four-way entry, affecting forklift access and handling.

Benefits include standardized handling, faster loading and unloading, improved protection for goods, and easier inventory control. Common applications are manufacturing, wholesale, retail, e-commerce, and cold-chain logistics. Challenges involve ensuring even load distribution, avoiding overloading, and choosing the right pattern for irregularly shaped or fragile items.

Automation and sustainability trends are shaping palletization. Robotic palletizers, conveyors, and sortation systems are increasingly used to improve consistency and throughput. Reusable pallets reduce packaging waste and support recycling programs, while proper pallet selection and ISPM 15 compliance help prevent pests in international trade.
