Overresponsiveness is the tendency to respond disproportionately to stimuli, cues, or requests, producing reactions that are excessive relative to the triggering event. The term is used across disciplines to describe heightened emotional, cognitive, sensory, or behavioral reactivity. It can occur in clinical contexts—such as anxiety disorders or sensory processing issues—as well as in everyday interpersonal interactions.

Manifestations include emotional overreaction (intense anger, fear, or sadness to minor triggers), sensory overresponsivity (distress from ordinary sounds, touch, or textures), cognitive overresponsivity (rumination or catastrophic thinking after minor concerns), and behavioral overreactivity (impulsive or aggressive responses).

Causes and risk factors include neurobiological factors such as heightened amygdala reactivity, genetic predisposition, history of trauma, chronic stress, anxiety disorders, sensory processing differences, and sleep disruption. Developmental or psychiatric conditions may also contribute, including autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in some individuals.

Implications of overresponsiveness can include impaired daily functioning, strained relationships, reduced occupational or academic performance, and heightened stress or burnout. It may also lead to avoidance or exaggerated perceptions of threat, and can be mistaken for deliberate or intentional hostility in social or professional contexts.

Assessment and management typically involve clinical evaluation and, when relevant, standardized scales for emotional regulation or sensory responsiveness. Management strategies may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, skills training in emotion regulation, gradual exposure or desensitization when appropriate, environmental modifications, and addressing any underlying conditions such as anxiety or sensory processing differences.
