An ortotist is a healthcare professional specializing in the design, fabrication, and fitting of orthoses. Ortotists work with individuals who have a wide range of conditions, including congenital disabilities, trauma, neurological disorders, and degenerative diseases. Their goal is to improve mobility, reduce pain, enhance function, and prevent further deterioration. They assess a patient's needs through examination and consultation, taking measurements and casting or scanning the affected body part. Based on this information, they design and create custom orthoses or select prefabricated ones.

The fabrication process may involve various materials such as plastics, metals, leather, and composites. After the orthosis is made, the ortotist fits it to the patient, ensuring proper alignment and comfort. They also educate patients and their caregivers on how to use, maintain, and care for the orthosis.
