Ortotists

An orthotist is a healthcare professional who specializes in the design, fabrication, and fitting of orthoses. Orthoses, often called braces, are external devices used to support, align, prevent, or correct the function of movable parts of the body, or to replace or modify the shape of a movable part of the body.

These professionals work with a variety of patients, from infants to the elderly, who may have conditions affecting their limbs, spine, or trunk. Common reasons for needing an orthosis include congenital deformities, trauma, neurological conditions like stroke or cerebral palsy, musculoskeletal disorders such as scoliosis or osteoarthritis, and post-surgical rehabilitation.

The process typically begins with an assessment of the patient's condition and needs. The orthotist then collaborates with the patient and their medical team, which may include physicians, physical therapists, and occupational therapists, to determine the most appropriate orthotic intervention. Custom orthoses are often fabricated using precise measurements and impressions of the patient's body, utilizing materials like plastic, metal, carbon fiber, and specialized padding.

Orthotists are also responsible for educating patients on how to properly wear, care for, and use their orthoses to achieve the best functional outcomes. They monitor the patient's progress and make adjustments to the orthosis as needed to ensure continued effectiveness and comfort. This role requires a strong understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, materials science, and patient care. The field is governed by professional standards and often requires specific education and certification.
