Orthopeed is the Dutch term for an orthopedic surgeon, a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopeeds care for conditions affecting bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and related structures in patients of all ages, from birth through old age.

Orthopedists manage a wide range of problems, including fractures, congenital deformities, degenerative diseases, arthritis, sports injuries, and spinal disorders. Their work encompasses both nonoperative and operative care. Nonoperative approaches may include physical therapy, bracing or casting, medications, and lifestyle modifications, while operative procedures can involve fracture fixation, joint replacement or resurfacing, arthroscopy, spine surgery, limb lengthening or reconstruction, and soft tissue repair.

Education and training for orthopeeds typically follow completion of a medical degree and a specialty residency in orthopedic surgery. Many also pursue fellowships to sub specialize in areas such as spine, hip and knee, shoulder and elbow, hand surgery, foot and ankle, pediatric orthopedics, trauma, sports medicine, or musculoskeletal oncology. Certification or board membership is common in many countries and may be required to practice independently.

Work settings for orthopedists include hospitals, academic medical centers, and private clinics. They collaborate with radiologists, physical and occupational therapists, primary care physicians, and other specialists to coordinate care. Imaging and diagnostics—such as X-ray, MRI, and CT scans—inform treatment decisions, and outcomes are supported by rehabilitation and follow-up care.

Historically, orthopedics emerged as a distinct medical field in the 18th and 19th centuries and has since evolved with advances in surgical techniques, implants, and minimally invasive methods. The term orthopeed reflects regional language usage for this medical specialty.
