A fellowship is financial support awarded to individuals to pursue study, research, professional development, or artistic creation. Unlike grants to institutions, fellowships are typically granted to a person and may include a stipend, salary, or tuition coverage. Many fellowships also involve affiliation with a host organization, a residency, or a defined project with deliverables or reporting requirements.

Fellowships span fields and purposes. Academic and research fellowships provide time and resources for scholars during or after graduate training. Professional and public-policy fellowships place practitioners in government, journalism, or think tanks. Clinical fellowships offer specialized medical training. Artistic and creative fellowships support writers and artists. Community or leadership fellowships focus on civic engagement, social entrepreneurship, or service.

Applications typically require a project proposal or statement of purpose, a CV or résumé, letters of recommendation, and samples of work or audition material. Selection is usually merit-based and conducted by a panel. Criteria include project significance and feasibility, the applicant’s track record, and alignment with funder goals. Awards may include stipends, travel funds, and access to mentors or institutional resources.

Notable examples include postdoctoral and other academic fellowships, Fulbright exchanges, Rhodes and Marshall scholarships, and European Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions; professional fellowships in journalism or policy; artist residencies such as MacDowell; and leadership programs funded by foundations or government agencies.

Fellowships can accelerate careers and expand networks, but concerns about equity and access remain. Applicants from underrepresented regions or disciplines may face barriers, and the duration and funding cycles of programs can affect long-term planning.
