olukorramälu

Olukorramälu is a proposed concept in cognitive science and anthropology describing the persistence of situational context in human memory. The term combines Estonian olukord meaning “situation” with mälu meaning “memory,” and it is used to refer to the part of memory that preserves information about the surrounding conditions, participants, and temporal constraints of a moment beyond the exact sequence of events.

In theoretical models, olukorramälu interacts with working memory, episodic memory, and semantic memory. It is thought to encode cues such as location, objects, social dynamics, and ongoing tasks, enabling the retrieval of a usable representation of the situation to guide future behavior, support situational awareness, and inform decision making.

The concept helps explain why people often remember the gist of a scene and important contextual details even when precise details fade. It has been discussed in the context of crisis management, social coordination, and human–computer interaction, where context-aware memory can influence performance and learning. Proponents view olukorramälu as a useful shorthand for examining how contextual information persists after a situation ends and how it affects subsequent actions.

Critics note that the term overlaps with established notions of contextual memory and event memory, and that there is ongoing debate about clear definitions and reliable measurement. Nevertheless, olukorramälu serves as a conceptual focal point for researching how situational context is stored and utilized in everyday cognition.
