Ocieplenia is a broad term used in Polish to describe thermal insulation measures for buildings. It covers activities and systems aimed at increasing the thermal resistance of the building envelope to reduce heat loss, improve comfort, and lower energy consumption. Ocieplenia can be applied to different parts of a building, most commonly the external walls, internal walls, roofs, and floors.

The most common form in Poland is external thermal insulation, known as ocieplenie elewacyjne or ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite System). It typically uses insulating boards such as styropian (EPS) or mineral wool, fixed to the substrate with adhesive and mechanical fixings, then reinforced with a glass fiber mesh and finished with a protective or decorative plaster. Internal insulation involves installing insulating boards or plaster with a suitable finish on the interior side of walls, often used when external work is impractical.

Materials frequently used include styropian, mineral wool, polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foams, and various plaster or render systems. The choice of material and thickness depends on climate, building type, moisture considerations, and regulatory requirements.

Benefits of ocieplenia include reduced heating costs, improved comfort, and lower CO2 emissions, as well as increased durability of the building envelope and sometimes better acoustic performance. Potential risks include moisture condensation and mold growth if ventilation is inadequate or installation is improper, underscoring the need for proper design and skilled execution.

Standards and regulations in Poland and the European Union govern thermal performance, fire safety, moisture management, and installation quality. Subsidies and guidance programs for energy modernization are commonly available to support such projects.
