This process leads to a thinning and loss of function of the stomach lining, impairing its ability to produce acid and digestive enzymes.

The exact causes of nyálkahártyaelrehaladó are not fully understood, but it is often associated with chronic inflammation of the stomach, particularly Helicobacter pylori infection.
