Nubuk, or nubuck leather, is a type of leather known for its soft, velvety nap. It is produced from the outer grain of animal hides, most commonly cowhide, but also buffalo or other species. After tanning, the grain side is carefully buffed or sanded to create a short, uniform nap that gives the material a suede-like feel while retaining more strength than typical suede.

Nubuk differs from suede in its source and finishing. Suede is made from the inner split of the hide, while nubuk uses the top grain. This gives nubuk greater durability and resistance to wear, though it remains susceptible to staining and water damage. The color is usually achieved through dyeing, and some nubuk products feature protective coatings to improve stain resistance.

The surface can be left natural or treated with additional finishes. Regular maintenance aims to preserve the nap; a nubuck brush is used to raise the fibers, and specialized nubuck cleaners or mild soap can remove dirt without saturating the leather. Water exposure should be avoided or promptly dried; nubuk should never be fully soaked.

Care and protection: After cleaning, applying a suitable nubuck protector spray helps repel water and oil-based stains. Reapplication is often necessary after cleaning or heavy use. Storage away from direct sunlight or excessive humidity helps prevent fading or drying.

Uses: Nubuk is widely used for footwear, including boots and casual shoes, as well as handbags, belts, and upholstered goods. It offers a balance of durability and the luxurious feel associated with suede-like leather.
