A neurotologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear and related structures of the head and neck. They are often otolaryngologists, also known as ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctors, who have completed additional fellowship training in neurotology. This subspecialty focuses on the complex anatomy and physiology of the inner ear, brainstem, and cranial nerves involved in hearing and balance.

Neurotologists manage a wide range of conditions affecting hearing, balance, and facial nerve function. This includes hearing loss of various types, such as sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss. They also treat conditions like Ménière's disease, which causes vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing fluctuations. Other common conditions addressed by neurotologists are benign tumors of the ear and skull base, such as acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas), and facial nerve paralysis and disorders.

The diagnostic process in neurotology often involves detailed audiological evaluations, including pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and tympanometry. More advanced tests may include auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing, electrocochleography (ECoG), and vestibular function tests like videonystagmography (VNG) and rotational chair testing. Neurotologists also utilize imaging techniques such as MRI and CT scans to visualize the inner ear structures and surrounding neural pathways.

Treatment options offered by neurotologists depend on the specific diagnosis and may include medical management with medications, surgical interventions, or rehabilitative therapies. Surgical procedures can range from stapes surgery for otosclerosis to cochlear implantation for severe to profound hearing loss. They may also perform surgery for tumors, chronic ear infections, and conditions causing dizziness or facial nerve dysfunction. Neurotologists work closely with audiologists, speech therapists, and other specialists to provide comprehensive care for their patients.
