A neurotologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ear and its related structures, including the balance system and the nerves that control hearing and balance. This subspecialty of otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat medicine) focuses on conditions that affect the inner ear, cranial nerves, and the brainstem pathways related to hearing and balance.

Neurotologists typically diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions. These can include hearing loss of various types, such as sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss. They also treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and hyperacusis (increased sensitivity to sound). Balance disorders, such as vertigo, dizziness, and Meniere's disease, are a significant part of their practice. Additionally, neurotologists address facial nerve disorders, including Bell's palsy, and tumors affecting the auditory and vestibular systems, such as acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas).

Neurotologists may also order imaging studies like MRI or CT scans.

Surgical procedures performed by neurotologists include stapes surgery for hearing loss, cochlear implantation for severe to profound hearing loss, vestibular nerve sectioning for intractable vertigo, and surgical removal of tumors in the cerebellopontine angle. They work closely with audiologists and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for their patients.
